With Cobresal securing the title last weekend, much of this weekend’s focus was on the relegation battle with some interest in qualification for the Copa Sudamericana playoffs.
Earlier in the week the ANFP hit Cobreloa with a three point deduction during the week for breaching Article 53 of the league’s regulations which state a coach is not able to coach two different clubs in the same season. This occurred when Alejandro Hisis took charge as an interim coach for two matches earlier in the season but Hsis had already formed that function for Ñublense earlier in the season. This three point deduction effectively relegated Cobreloa before a ball was kicked in the final match of the season meaning only one relegation spot was still available.
In light of that it was somewhat ironic that Ñublense would face Cobreloa in the last round and despite the former triumphing 3-2, would be also be relegated with their opponents. This was due to San Marcos defeating Audax Italiano 3-0 and Antofagasta drawing 2-2 with O’Higgins in the other two matches involving teams that facing the threat of relegation. San Marcos’ win gave them an added bonus of qualifying them for the post-season Copa Sudamericana playoff along with O’Higgins.
Also joining them in those playoffs are Universidad Católica, who finished the season with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Universidad de Concepción, and Unión La Calera who defeated Universidad de Chile 2-1 to claim their spot.
The champions Cobresal finished their season with a 1-1 draw with Unión Española, a result which meant los hispanos missed out on an opportunity to partake in the playoffs for the last remaining Copa Sudamericana spot. Finishing in second spot behind Cobresal, were Colo Colo, who finished their season with a 3-1 defeat of Santiago Wanderers with Esteban Paredes scoring two of those goals and taking him to joint top of the season’s goalscoring charts alongside Unión La Calera’s Jean Paul Pineda.
The weekend’s other match saw Huachipato come from a goal behind to defeat Iquique 2-1 courtesy of goals to Martin Rodriguez and Andres Vilches.
