The penultimate round of the Clausura season saw Cobresal crowned 2015 Clausura champions whilst at the other end of the table five teams look to avoid relegation.
Cobresal’s first ever Primera Division title came after they defeated relegated Barnechea 3-2 and Universidad Católica drew 3-3 with Iquique giving them an unassailable four point lead at the top of the table with a round remaining. The title came in dramatic circumstances as Cobresal had to twice come from a goal down against a Barnechea side that was only really playing for pride before a 82nd minute penalty by Matias Donoso sealed all three points for the team from El Salvador.
In a match played at the same time Universidad Católica gave up a three goal half time lead to draw 3-3 with Iquique that in all likelihood will see them once again finish second. Goals to David Llanos (x 2) amd Jose Luis Muñoz had los cruzados dreaming of taking the title race to the final weekend but three second half goals to Misael Davila, Michael Contreras and Cesar Pinares put paid to those dreams. Católica did have a chance to win it late on but had his penalty saved Iquique goalkeeper Brayan Cortes after Patricio Polic awarded a somewhat dubious penalty in favour of the home side.
Going into the final round Colo Colo had a slim chance of claiming the title, having to win and rely on Cobresal slipping up. Win they did as they put four goals past Cobreloa with Felipe Flores scoring three of them. The loss for Cobreloa saw them once again return to the bottom three of the relegation table. For Cobreloa to be relegated in the same season as fierce rivals Cobresal claim their first title would be particularly galling for the team from Calama.
With Barnechea having already been mathematically relegated only two spots remain and joining Cobreloa in the bottom three are Ñublense, who lost 2-1 to Universidad de Chile as Leandro Benegas grabbed a brace. Coincidentally Cobreloa will take on Ñublense in the upcoming final round of the season. There are three other teams that could be relegated come the end of the season and they are San Marcos de Arica, Audax Italiano and Antofagasta. Both San Marcos and Antofagasta both suffered losses on the weekend with latter going down 1-0 to Universidad de Concepción and the former losing by the same result against Huachipato. Audax Italiano, who will play San Marcos in the final round, defeat O’Higgins 3-0 and look the most unlikely to be relegated at this stage.
In other matches Unión Española defeat Palestino 3-2 in the clásico de colonias whilst Santiago Wanderers defeated Unión La Calera 4-2.
