After fifteen rounds, Cobresal still sit atop the league, but now have had their lead cut to only two points following a weekend loss of which Universidad Católica took advantage of with an important win.
In the weekend’s opening fixture a somewhat lacklustre looking Cobresal lost only their third match of the season as they went down 2-0 to O’Higgins in the Estadio El Teniente. Both goals for O’Higgins came via Gaston Lezcano whilst Cobresal may be left ruing a Victor Hugo Sarabia penalty miss in the twenty-fifth minute.
For the second successive match at the Estadio Monumental, Colo Colo suffered and embarrassing loss this time at the hands of Universidad Católica in the clásico, who triumphed 3-0 in Saturday’s opening fixture. This followed on from the midweek 3-1 loss at the hands of Colombian side Santa Fe in the Copa Libertadores. It was a first half blitz from los cruzados which saw them triumph with all three of their goals coming in the opening forty-five minutes courtesy of Jose Luis Muñoz, Walter Ibañez and Erick Pulgar. The win enabled Universidad Católica to leap frog Colo Colo into second spot, and only two points behind the league leaders with two rounds remaining.
Mathematically Huachipato still have a chance of claiming the Clausura title, sitting five points back in fourth position following a 1-0 victory of Unión Española on the weekend. In realistic terms, the team from Talcahuano who need a minor miracle in order to claim the title.
The two Chilean representatives that have so far been knocked out of the Copa Libertadores suffered much differing fortunes on the domestic front with Universidad de Chile putting four goals past Barnechea in a 4-1 victory whilst Palestino conceded four in their 4-0 loss at the hands of Unión La Calera. Whilst their continental form has been abysmal, La U, after a terrible start to the season have been quietly accumulating points and have moved up to sixth position on the table. Barnechea, for their part can now look forward to a return to the Primera B next season.
Who will join Barnechea in their descent will go down to the final two rounds with Cobreloa making a valiant attempt to avoid the drop as they moved out of the bottom three of the relegation table with a 3-1 defeat of Antofagasta. The two teams currently sitting in the bottom three with Barnechea are Ñublense and Audax Italiano, who both drew their weekend fixtures against Santiago Wanderers and Universidad de Concepción respectively.
In the weekend’s other match, Iquique took out the clásico el norte with a 4-1 defeat of San Marcos de Arica.
