Copa Libertadores 2015: Colo Colo and Palestino both secure wins

It was a good week for Chilean teams in the Copa Libertadores with the two teams in action, Colo Colo and Palestino, both picking up important wins.

Palestino, who needed a win to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition, did just that with a comprehensive 4-0 defeat of Venezuelan side, Zamora in the Estadio Santa Laura. All of los arabes goals came in the second half with Diego Chaves scoring a brace whilst Leonardo Valencia and Mathias Vidangossy also got on the scoresheet. The win sees Palestino draw level with second placed Montevideo Wanderers, who have a game in hand, on seven points. It will be a tough task for the Chilean club to progress as Wanderers face Boca Juniors and Zamora in their final two matches whilst Palestino face off against Boca Juniors in the Bombonera in their final group match.

Colo Colo became only the second Chilean team to win in Mexico in the Copa Libertadores with an impressive 3-1 win over Atlas. The hero of the day for los albos was Esteban Paredes who scored his 98th and 99th goals for the club. Joining him on the scoresheet was Leonardo Caceres whilst Atlas’ only goal came via Juan Carlos Medina’s penalty. With two matches remaining Colo Colo sit atop their group with nine points, although mathematically all teams can still qualify for the knockout stages so there will be no resting on their laurels from the Chilean giants.
