Campeonato Clausura 2015: Weeks Nine Review

We have hit the halfway mark of the Clausura season and Cobresal are sitting pretty on top of the table three points clear of their nearest rival Colo Colo, who have emerged from the pack as the most likely challenger for this year’s title.

Cobresal stretched their lead at the summit with an impressive 4-2 of Universidad Católica in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquimbo. The star of the show was Cobresal’s Matias Donoso, who netted himself a hat-trick with goals in the 33rd, 87th and 91st minutes. Universidad Católica drop to fifth with the loss.

Winning four of their last five matches Colo Colo have emerged from the pack as one of the favourites for the Clausura title. Once again los albos did it the hard way playing half the game against struggling Ñublense with ten men when referee Claudio Puga gave Gonzalo Fierro his marching orders on the stroke of half time. And once again it was Esteban Paredes who came to the rescue with a golazo in the 82nd minute to secure all three points.

Sitting one point behind Colo Colo on the table are the triumvirate of San Marcos de Arica, Unión La Calera and Universidad de Concepción. Los penguistas arrested a three match losing streak in a scoreless draw with Santiago Wanderers whilst both San Marcos and La Calera both went down to a solitary goal to Cobreloa and Huachipato respectively.

Universidad de Chile terrible season continued as they went down 3-2 to Audax Italiano in the final match of the round on Monday night. It was an important win for los italicos as they look to make space between themselves and the bottom three of the relegation table whilst for La U it is their seventh loss in their last nine matches in all competitions.

Meanwhile in other matches O’Higgins defeated Barnechea 3-1, Antofagasta lost 2-1 to the ten men of Unión Española and Palestino and Iquique shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
