If someone had told you that after eight weeks of the Clausura season that your top three teams would be Cobresal, San Marcos de Arica and Unión La Calera you probably would have laughed in their face. But after eight weeks in what is currently one of the interesting short tournaments in recent history those three sides do sit atop the Primera Division table.
Cobresal claimed top spot with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Santiago Wanderers on Sunday afternoon with Victor Sarabia’s 75th minute proving to be the difference between the two teams. They sit one point ahead of San Marcos de Arica, who somehow drew with Universidad Católica after taking a 3-1 lead in the 79th minute. However two late goals to David Llanos and Roberto Gutierrez, the latter coming in the fifth minute of stoppage time, ensured that the points would be shared and that los cruzados stayed in touch with the league leaders. Unión La Calera did have a chance to go two points clear at the top of the table but lost 2-1 to Iquique in the final match of the round.
Meanwhile Universidad de Chile managed to end a winless streak of five matches with a 2-1 victory over Universidad de Concepción, who slumped to their third consecutive loss following their five match winning streak to start the season. Pleasing for many La U fans would be the form of youngster Fabian Carmona who scored in his second consecutive match.
Colo Colo almost managed to snatch an unlikely win with nine men against Palestino but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with los arabes. Los albos were initially reduced to ten men in the 21st minute when Emiliano Vecchio was given a straight red card for an errant card and he was joined in the stands by veteran Humberto Suazo in the 38th minute, who saw red for his reaction to an initial yellow card. Despite the advantage it was Colo Colo who took the lead courtesy of a Jaime Valdes free kick in the 75th minute before Renato Ramos levelled things up three minutes later. Los albos thought they had the winner in the final minute of the match but Claudio Baeza’s header was correctly ruled offside.
At the wrong end of the table there were losses for all three teams in the relegation zone with Barnechea going down 3-1 to Ñublense in the weekend’s opening fixture with los diablos rojos giving themselves a small amount of breathing space from the bottom three in the process. In a similar position to Ñublense were Audax Italiano who defeated Cobreloa 1-0 whilst Antofagasta went down 2-0 Huachipato. In the weekend’s other match O’Higgins defeated Unión Española 2-1 to pick up their third win of the season.
