Campeonato Clausura 2015: Weeks Five & Six Review

Rounds five and six of the Clausura season were basically one big round that ran from Tuesday through to Monday but little had changed at the top of the table with Universidad de Concepción still leading the way despite their perfect start to the season coming to an end whilst of the big three Universidad Católica have closed the gap and Colo Colo look to be building up a head of steam.

Universidad de Concepción’s perfect start came to an end at the hands of Unión Española in round six with a 2-1 defeat. This followed Universidad de Concepción’s 2-1 defeat of Barnechea in the earlier round. The win was Unión Española’s first of the season and relieves some pressure on manager, Jose Luis Sierra.

Universidad Católica bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Santiago Wanderers in round five to triumph 3-2 over Palestino that saw them move to within two points of the league leaders. Wanderers for their part continued their topsy-turvy start to the campaign by following up that impressive win with a 2-1 loss to Audax Italiano.

Colo Colo look to be building up a head of steam with consecutive wins, although wins against struggling sides such as Barnechea and Unión Española need to be taken with a pinch of salt but they are looking in a much better position than a few weeks ago.

A team that is not in a better position than a few weeks ago is Universidad de Chile, with the Apertura champions losing to Iquique and drawing with Huachipato in their two matches. La U have only five points to their name after six rounds and are languishing in fourteenth position on the table. Things aren’t going to get easier for Martin Lasarte’s men with their Copa Libertadores campaign set to begin shortly which will increase their workload.

One of the surprise packets this season has been Unión La Calera who currently sit in second position, two points behind the league leaders, following a 2-1 defeat of Ñublense and a scoreless draw with Cobreloa. If they had managed to beat relegation threatened Cobreloa, they would have topped the table at the end of round six.

Another surprise packet has been San Marcos de Arica, who are valiantly looking to avoid a return to the Primera B. A win and draw on the weekend saw them move into fourth position on the table, only three points of top spot. They could have even been higher on the table save for a 98th minute equaliser from Cobresal’s Matias Donoso in their round six encounter.

In terms of the relegation table, the three teams currently in the drop zone are Ñublense, Cobreloa and Barnechea. Cobreloa were the only team to pick up a point over the two rounds whilst Barnechea look very much set for a return to the Primera B having only picked up two points so far this season.
