After a week off for a quasi-international break the Primera Division was back in action with Universidad de Concepción keeping their perfect record and their spot at the top of the table intact whilst Universidad Católica are the only one of the big three in contention at this early stage of the season.
Universidad de Concepción maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-2 win over Cobreloa. Four of the game’s five came in the first with Gabriel Vargas’ first half brace for Universidad de Concepción cancelled out by goals to Gustavo Cristaldo and Ignacio Herrera. The winner came late on with Felipe Reynero popping up with the winner in the 81st minute. Whilst the win sees Universidad de Concepción sit pretty alone on top of the table, their opponents are now well and truly entrenched in the relegation zone.
Universidad Católica continued their good start to the season with a come from behind 2-1 win over Ñublense in the weekend’s final match which sees them in second position on the table two points behind Universidad de Concepción. There was some luck involved for los cruzados as both of their goals came courtesy of their opponents.
In contrast, Apertura champions Universidad de Chile’s poor start to the season continued with a 3-1 loss at home to Antofagasta, who despite the win still sit in the relegation zone. Antofagasta’ goals came courtesy of Marco Bolados, Ronald Gutierrez and Luis Cabrea whilst Mathias Corujo was the only scorer for La U.
Universidad de Chile currently sit in thirteenth position, one place behind arch rivals Colo Colo who picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 win over O’Higgins. O’Higgins were behind the eight ball pretty much from the get go after Alejandro Lopez was given his marching orders in only the seventh minute. However it took until the second half before Colo Colo could make the most of their advantage as both Esteban Pavez and Jean Beausejour both found the back of the net.
Another team struggling is Unión Española who suffered their third defeat of the season at the hands at Unión La Calera with former Unión Española player Patricio Vidal getting on the scoresheet in his team’s 2-0 victory. Unión Española currently sit bottom of the table whilst La Calera are riding high in third.
In the middle of the table, Santiago Wanderers continue their up and down start to the season with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Iquique whilst Palestino prepared for their Copa Libertadores campaign with a 2-1 defeat of Audax Italiano in the clasico de colonias. Meanwhile San Marcos de Arica continued their unbeaten start to the season with a scoreless draw against the struggling Barnechea, who sit one spot above Unión Española in last position.
