Three rounds in and the Primera Division has a surprise leader whilst big spending Colo Colo is still yet to register a win this season.
Sitting on top of the table is Universidad de Concepción who maintained their perfect start to the season with a come from behind 2-1 victory over O’Higgins on Saturday afternoon. O’Higgins opened the scoring in the first minute courtesy of Gaston Lezcano but were reduced to ten men shortly thereafter after Felipe Muñoz got his marching orders. It took until the second half before Universidad de Concepción were back on level terms via a Gabriel Vargas penalty before Diego Guastavino goal nine minutes before time ensured all three points.
Two points behind Universidad de Concepción are a group of three teams, Cobresal, Universidad Católica and San Marcos de Arica, who all recorded wins on the weekend. Cobresal scored four goals in thirty-five minutes against Iquique before having Rodrigo Urena sent off in the 55th minute and then holding on for a 4-2 victory. Meanwhile a brace to Mark Gonzalez, his third and fourth goals of the season, helped Universidad Católica to a 3-1 victory over Cobreloa, ending the northerners perfect start to the season and also returning them to the relegation zone. San Marcos de Arica, who also have relegation on their mind, secured a surprise 2-1 victory away to Unión Española ensuring los hispanos only have one point to their name after three rounds.
Another team who has only one point to their name is Colo Colo, who had to rely on talisman Esteban Paredes for a share of the spoils against Huachipato in a 2-2 draw on Sunday evening. Huachipato, who also secured their first points of the Clausura season.
In one of the games of the season so far, Santiago Wanderers showed that even without Roberto Gutierrez they are force to be reckoned with as they saw off Apertura champions 3-2 in the Estadio Bicentenario Elias Figueroa. Getting on the score sheet for the team from Valparaiso were Gaston Cellerino, Pablo Tamburrini and Ronnie Fernandez whilst Gonzalo Espinoza and Leandro Benegas were the scorers for La U.
The round also saw two hat-tricks with Diego Chaves scoring all three goals in Palestino’s 3-0 victory over Ñublense whilst Jean Paul Pineda continued his excellent start to the season with a hat-trick in Unión La Calera’s 4-3 defeat of Antofagasta. Whilst the goals were flowing in elsewhere it wasn’t the case for Barnechea and Audax Italiano in the last match of the round as they fought out a 0-0 draw, a result which did neither team any favours as they look to avoid relegation.
