After being somewhat surprisingly knocked out of the Copa Chile on penalties by Primera B side Unión San Felipe, Santiago Wanderers bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Palestino in the league to start proceedings in week eleven of the Apertura season. The only goal of the game came in the 69th minute after converted from the penalty spot after Palestino goalkeeper Dario Melo was adjudged to have fouled Marco Medel in the area. The win sees Wanderers maintain their third position on the table and within touching distance of the top two.
Meanwhile in Chillian, Ñublense bounced back from their last start loss to Antofagasta with a 2-1 defeat of Universidad de Concepción. Sebastian Varas was the hero with a brace whilst Gabriel Vargas’ late goal after capitalising on Ñublense defensive error gave the visitors some hope but in the end proved just to be a consolation goal.
Universidad Católica’s horror season continued on Saturday afternoon as they went down 1-0 to Barnechea in the Estadio Santa Laura. Cristian Ivanobsky was the hero for Barnechea scoring the game’s only goal in the 27th minute when he pounced on Franco Constanzo’s save from a Francisco Ibañez effort.
The lack of goals continued with the weekend’s fourth fixture with Iquique and O’Higgins playing out a scoreless draw in the Estadio Tierra de Campeones. Iquique did have a chance to take all three points but O’Higgins goalkeeper Jorge Carranza saved Rodrigo Diaz’s 17th minute penalty attempt.
Saturday’s final match saw San Marcos de Arica continue their good form at home and cause somewhat of an upset with a 2-1 defeat of Unión La Calera. Pablo Gonzalez opened the scoring for the home side on forty minutes as he got on the end of a Marcos Ciani cross before Carlos Sepulveda levelled things up with twenty minutes remaining. However Nicolas Medina soon restored San Marcos’ lead and secured all three points and more importantly took them out of the relegation zone for the time being.
Sunday, and in fact the whole round, was all about one match and that was the superclasico between Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile at the Estadio Monumental. And it was los albos who would walk with the bragging rights defeating their rivals 2-0 on the day and more importantly from their point of view reducing La U’s lead at the top of the table to two points. After a heating opening forty-five minutes it wasn’t until the 50th minute that Colo Colo opened the scoring courtesy of Esteban Paredes. Things got worse for La U nine minutes later as Jose Rojas was given his marching orders for his second bookable offence. Jean Beausejour doubled Colo Colo’s advantage in the 78th minute before Osvaldo Gonzalez became the second Universidad de Chile player to receive their marching orders two minutes later for a foul on Juan Delgado.
In the north of the country former La U player Ruben Farfan 94th minute goal ensured Antofagasta grabbed a share of the spoils as they drew 1-1 with fellow northerners Cobresal. Farfan’s goal came after Matias Donoso had opened the scoring in the 59th minute.
Sunday’s final game also saw a late goal with Rene Lima converting a late penalty against former side as Unión Española defeated Cobreloa 2-1 in the Estadio Santa Laura. Before the late drama Marcos Gonzalez’s header had seen the home side take the lead in the 48th minute before Cobreloa somewhat surprisingly equalised via Alvaro Lopez ten minutes before full time. However it wasn’t to be for the visitors when Enrique Osses pointed to the spot in the last minute of the encounter. The win sees Unión move into fourth position on the table whilst their opponents are currently stranded in the relegation zone.
Another team in the relegation zone is Audax Italiano but unlike Cobreloa they managed to win on the weekend, defeating Huachipato 2-1 in the Estadio CAP. Ivan Vasquez opened the scoring for Audax in the 26th minute before Felipe Mora doubled their advantage midway through the second half. Juan Carlos Espinoza pulled one back for Huachipato in the 79th minute but any attempts at a comeback were thwarted by the sending off of Leonardo Povea seven minutes later.
