Despite playing with a man advantage for almost an hour Huachipato were unable to capitalise, losing 1-0 to Sao Paulo in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana tie in Brazil. Los acereros did have their chances and they paid the price in the 55th minute when Michel Bastos fired home. Bastos’ goal came despite the fact that the home side had been playing with ten men since the 33rd minute after Luis Fabiano was given his marching orders after striking Francisco Arrue.
The return leg will take place on the 15th October in the Estadio CAP in Talcahuano with Huachipato looking to make the last eight of the competition. They will need to get past a Sao Paulo team who have knocked out both Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica in the previous two editions of the competition and will be looking to make it three in a row.
