Campeonato Apertura 2014: Week Nine Review

The weekend’s opening fixture on Saturday saw Santiago Wanderers continue their excellent form so far this season as they defeated Universidad de Concepción 3-1 in the Estadio Municipal de Yumbel. Doing the damage once again for the Wanderers were Roberto Gutierrez and Jorge Luna (x2), with the pair now having scoring fourteen of their team’s nineteen goals so far this season. Pedro Muñoz got on the scoresheet for Universidad de Concepción with his 55th minute effort cancelling out the aforementioned Gutierrez’s 53rd minute opener.

Universidad de Chile continued their unbeaten start to the season in the weekend’s next match with a 3-2 defeat of Audax Italiano in the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida. Diego Vallejos opened the scoring for Audax in the 28th minute but any celebrations from the home fans were short lived as goals to Patricio Rubio and Sebastian Ubilla gave La U the lead four minutes later. Gustavo Canales added a third, his seventh of the season, in the 50th minute before Juan Cornejo pulled one back for the home side with fourteen minutes to go to give his side some hope but it wasn’t to be. The win sees los azules take their record to eight wins and a draw whilst for Audax they are much in the relegation zone.

Two late goals from Diego Chavez and Luis Valenzuela ensured Barnechea’s poor start to life in the Primera Division would continue as they lost 2-1 to O’Higgins in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquimbo. The game’s three goals all came in the second half with Nicolas Maturana opening the scoring for Barnechea in the 67th minute before the goals from Chavez and Valenzuela ensured O’Higgins would return to the winner’s list.

Speaking of late goals fans of Unión Española had to wait until the 91st minute for the only goal of the game which saw them triumph 1-0 over bottom placed Antofagasta. The scorer of the goal was captain Jorge Ampuero and it sees la furia roja maintain their spot in fourth position on the table.

Saturday’s final game saw Cobreloa secure only their second win of the season with a 1-0 win over fellow northerners, San Marcos de Arica. The only goal of the game came in the 25th minute courtesy of Fernando Cornejo, which was also his first goal as a professional footballer.

The 1-0 scorelines continued on Sunday with Universidad Católica defeating Cobresal by that scoreline in the Estadio El Cobre. The game’s only goal came in the eighteenth minute courtesy of Mauro Obolo and see los cruzados move up to seventh position on the table.

One place where the goals were flowing were in the Estadio Tierra de Campeones with Palestino triumphing 4-2 over Iquique on their home turf. Getting on the scoresheet for Palestino were Diego Torres, Renato Ramos (x2) and Leonardo Valencia whilst for the home side Rodrigo Diaz and Manual Villalobos found the back of the net.

The weekend’s final match* saw Colo Colo held scoreless by Ñublense in the Estadio Monumental. Whilst not a catastrophic loss of points for los albos the result sees them drop five points behind league leaders Universidad de Chile with only eight rounds remaining.

* – Due to their Copa Sudamericana commitments Huachipato’s round nine match against Unión La Calera has been postponed.
