Universidad de Chile got the round under way on Thursday night with a 1-0 over Unión Española. The rub salt into the wounds of their opponents it was former Unión player, Gustavo Canales with the only goal of the game in the 75th minute. Canales’ goal, his sixth of the season, also highlighted the fact Unión have now gone three matches without a goal and very much miss their former striker as well as the departed Sebastian Jaime.
Overtaking Unión Española on the table are San Marcos de Arica who continued their excellent home record with a 1-0 victory over Palestino and moved up to seventh position in the process. They had to wait until late on to grab the three points with Kevin Harbottle netting the winner in the 95th minute.
Colo Colo continued their pursuit of Universidad de Chile at the top of the table with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Antofagasta in the Estadio Monumental, a match that saw Jean Beausejour score his first goal since returning to the Primera Division. Also on the scoresheet for los albos were Esteban Paredes, who scored in his seventh consecutive match, Juan Delgado and Jaime Valdes.
Also netting four goals without reply were Huachipato who put Santiago Wanderers to the sword on Saturday afternoon. Buoyed by their progression to the next stage of the Copa Sudamericana los acerceros were too good for their opponents, who had only lost one game up until this round. Lucas Simon, who appears not being missing former strike partner David Llanos, did the damage for Huachipato with a hat-trick whilst Andres Vilches grabbed the opening goal.
A last minute goal from Raul Octavio, his second of the game, ensured that Universidad Católica’s winless streak would continue as they drew 2-2 with O’Higgins in Sunday’s opening fixture. Jose Luis Munoz scored the opener for los cruzados in the eighth minute before Octavio levelled things up on the stroke of half time. David Llanos then restored Católica’s lead in the 62nd minute and it looked like the three points would be theirs before Octavio popped up in the 95th minute.
Also sharing the points were Universidad de Concepción and Unión La Calera as they drew 1-1. Matthias Aguirre opened the scoring for Concepción in the 45th minute for Emilio Hernandez equalised five minutes before full time.
Much of the day’s action was focused on the clásico el cobre or clásico miniero as it’s otherwise know between Cobresal and Cobreloa in the Estadio El Cobre. And it was Cobresal who triumphed 2-1, picking up their first win of the season in the process. The hero of the day was Cobresal goalkeeper Nicolas Peric who saved Gabriel Mendez’ 92nd minute and ensured his team would walk away with all three points. Mendez had earlier levelled things up after Cristian Ledesma had opened the scoring for Cobresal. In the end it was Miguel Escalona’s 88th minute header that proved to be the winner.
In a weekend on late goals it took until the 90th minute for Iquique to get the only goal of the game to defeat Barnechea 1-0. Francisco Castro was the hero as Iquique also secured they first win of the Apertura season.
The final match of the round took place in the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida and it was another match with only a solitary goal as Ñublense defeated Audax Italiano 1-0 courtesy of Mathias Riquero’s 30th minute goal.
