Four rounds gone and Universidad de Chile have kept up their perfect start to the season whilst rivals Universidad Católica and Colo Colo both suffered losses, with the latter’s coming at the hands of O’Higgins. Meanwhile at the other end of the table Barnechea secured their first points in the Primera Division.
The weekend’s action kicked off on Friday night with Unión Española bouncing back from their last start loss with a 2-0 victory over Unión La Calera in the Estadio Santa Laura. Both goals came in the second half in the space of five minutes courtesy of Nicolas Berardo and Fabian Saavedra. The night also saw Unión fans say farewell to club stalwart Sebastian Jaime, who is on his way to the MLS to play for Real Salt Lake.
Saturday’s opener saw the second clásico de colonias of the season take place with Alejandro Contreras 90th minute goal proving to be the difference between Palestino and Audax Italiano in the Estadio La Cisterna. The win was Palestino’s second of the season and sees them move up to sixth position on the table.
Universidad Católica’s up and down season continued in week four as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Ñublense in the Estadio Bicentenario Nelson Oyarzún. Los diablos rojos‘ goals came courtesy of Boris Sagredo and Jonathan Cisternas in the 22nd and 48th minutes respectively with José Antonio Rojas’ 35th minute sending off sandwiched in between. Mark Gonzalez pulled a goal back for los cruzados in the 67th minute but it was all to no avail.
Meanwhile Universidad de Chile maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-0 victory over Antofagasta in the Estadio Bicentenario Calvo y Bascuñan. The goals for Martin Lasarte’s team came courtesy of a brace to Sebastian Ubilla and Nicolas Ortiz own goal. The win sees La U maintain their three point lead at the top of the table.
Sitting three points behind Universidad de Chile are Santiago Wanderers, who continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Iquique in Saturday’s final match. Goals in either half to Jorge Luna and Ronnie Fernandez proved to be the difference for the Valparaiso based team who appear to enjoying life under new manager Emiliano Astorga.
In Sunday’s opening match O’Higgins came back a goal down twice to inflict Colo Colo’s first defeat of the season with a 3-2 victory. Both of Colo Colo’s goals came courtesy of Juan Delgado and Esteban Paredes, who scored in his fourth consecutive match, whilst Braulio Leal scored O’Higgins shortly after the half hour mark. O’Higgins’ second half goals came via Luis Valenzuela and Raul Octavio in the 70th and 79th minutes respectively and sees them move onto seven points, the same amount as their week four opponents.
The weekend’s only draw came in the seventh match of the round with Cobresal and Huachipato sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw in the Estadio El Cobre. Getting on the scoresheet for Cobresal were Ever Cantero and Victor Sarabia whilst Andres Vilches grabbed both of Huachipato’s goals.
Universidad de Concepción secured their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Cobreloa in the weekend’s penultimate encounter. Both of their goals came in the second half with Pedro Muñoz and Leandro Monje doing the damage for las penguistas.
The final match of the round saw a little bit of history created as Barnechea secured their first ever points and their first even win in the Primera Division as they defeated San Marcos de Arica 1-0 in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquimbo. And to rub salt into the wounds of the northerners it was one of their former players in the form of Francisco Ibañez, who scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute.
