Two rounds into the Apertura season and four teams have maintained their perfect starts to the season with Universidad de Chile, Santiago Wanderers, Unión Española and Huachipato being the culprits whilst Clausura champions Colo Colo were a tad fortunate to pick up their first win of the season and remain undefeated.

The round opened on Friday night in the north of the country as Antofagasta and Audax Italiano picked up their first points of the season in a scoreless draw in the Estadio Calvo y Bascuñan.

Saturday’s action kicked off down south with Universidad de Concecpión hosting Huachipato in the Estadio Municpal de Yumbel. And it was the visitors who maintained their perfect start to the season with a 1-0 victory courtesy of Andres Vilches’ 74th minute goal.

Another team to maintain their perfect record for the season so far are Universidad de Chile who travelled to the Estadio Bicentenario El Teniente and secured a 3-1 victory over O’Higgins. The hero of the afternoon was Gustavo Canales, who picked up a brace with goals in the 46th and 91st minutes. Also getting on the scoresheet for La U was Mathias Corujo, who scored for the second successive week, and is starting to draw comparisons with former La U player, Mathias Rodriguez. O’Higgins only goal of the game came courtesy of former San Lorenzo player, Fernando Elizari, whose 83rd minute gave the home side some hope of a share of the spoils before Canales snuffed that chance out late on.

Last week we saw our first managerial casualty with Hugo Vilches resigning as manager of Barnechea with his main claim being his team weren’t up to Primera Division standard. Twenty-seven year old Francisco Bozan became the youngest manager in Chilean Primera Division history when he replaced Vilches. The change in manager however did nothing to turn around their fortunes as the went down 3-0 to Unión La Calera in the Estadio San Carlo de Apoquimbo. All of La Calera’s goals came in the second half with Leonard Benegas scoring a brace whilst Jean Paul Pineda got the other to secure their first points of the season.

The final match of the day saw Milovan Mirosevic come back to haunt his former side with a 93rd minute winner in Unión Española’s 1-0 victory over Universidad Católica in the Estadio Santa Laura. The win ensures la furia roja maintain their perfect start to the season whilst their opponents will be left ruing the player they let go in the off season.

Sunday saw Ñublense pick up their first points of the season as they came from a goal behind to defeat San Marcos de Arica 2-1. Emilio Renteria opened the scoring for San Marcos in the 58th minute but his effort was soon cancelled out by Mathias Riquero’s 65th minute effort before Ñublense defender Sebastian Montesinos popped up in the 78th minute to secure all three points.

Another team to came back from a goal down on Sunday to claim all three points were Santiago Wanderers who saw off Cobreloa 2-1 in the Estadio La Madriguera. Jose Luis Jimenez opened the scoring for Cobreloa but goals to Matias Miera and Jorge Luna meant that Emiliano Astorga’s perfect start in charge of Wanderers was maintained.

The weekend’s penultimate match Cobresal joined Barnechea as the only teams yet to pick up any points so far this season as a 90th minute Leonardo Valencia effort saw them go down 1-0 to Palestino in the Estadio El Cobre.

Two second half goals to Esteban Paredes, the first of which was a contentious penalty, saw Colo Colo pick up their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Iquique in the Estadio Monumental but it was hardly a convincing performance from the Clausura champions. The imminent departure of Jose Pedro Fuenzalida to Argentinean giants Boca Juniors is also providing plenty of headaches for manager Hector Tapia, who will hoping someone apart from Paredes can step up to the mark and score some goals.
