Campeonato Apertura 2014: Week One Review

Universidad de Chile vs Cobresal

Whilst everyone else was still reminiscing about the recent World Cup the 2014 Apertura season got under way in Chile. The big winners from the weekend were Huachipato and Santiago Wanderers who both had 3-0 victories and see themselves on top of the table at the end of week one.

It seems like an eternity since Colo Colo finally claimed the much wanted thirtieth title and their bid to make it 31 started in less than spectacular style as they were held to an one-all draw by the newly promoted San Marcos de Arica in the Estadio Carlos Dittborn on Saturday.

In fact, it was San Marcos who opened the scoring in the 38th minute courtesy of Fernando Meza who beat Justo Villar with a header to score the season’s opening goal. Colo Colo struck back midway through the second half via Esteban Paredes, who continued where he left off last season, who slotted home from the penalty spot following a hand ball in the area by the home team. Jaime Valdes almost grabbed a winner late on for the visitors from a free kick but in the end the points were shared.

Meanwhile Julio Cesar Falcioni’s tenure in charge of Universidad Católica began with a win with new signing Mathias Cahais scoring on debut in the tenth minute in the 1-0 defeat of Antofagasta in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquimbo.

Another debut that didn’t go so well was Barnechea debut in the Primera Division as they went down 3-0 to Santiago Wanderers in the Estadio Bicentenario Elias Figueroa. Roberto Gutierrez started off where he left off on his return to Chilean football with a first half brace whilst Jorge Luna completed the scoring on the hour mark with a long range effort.

In the first clásico of the season, Unión Española continued their recent domination over Audax Italiano in the clásico de colonias as 32nd minute Sebastian Jaime strike gave them a 1-0 victory in the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida. The win is la furia roja’s six consecutive win against their opponents and stretches their undefeated record against los italicos to twelve matches.

Whilst Saturday saw Universidad Católica’s new manager start with a win the same couldn’t be said for new Palestino manager Pablo Guede as his side went down 2-1 to Cobreloa on Sunday afternoon. Both of Cobreloa’s goals came in the first half courtesy of Diego Silva and Gustavo Cristaldo before Marcos Riquelme pulled one back just before the hour mark.

O’Higgins, also under new management following the departure of Eduardo Berizzo in the off season, had a much better time of it under their new manager than Palestino as they saw off Unión La Calera 2-1 in the Estadio Nicolás Chahúan. Getting on the scoresheet for O’Higgins were Diego Chaves and Luis Valenzuela, whose 69th minute goal cancelled out Leonard Benegas’ equaliser shortly after half time.

Sunday also saw Huachipato begin the new season like they finished the last one as they comprehensively defeated Ñublense 3-0 in the Estadio CAP. The home side’s goals came courtesy of Francisco Arrue, Lucas Simon and Martin Rodriguez whilst for Ñublense’s afternoon got worse as they finished the match with ten men after Luis Pavez was given a straight red card for his foul on Leonardo Povea.

There must have been something about playing in the north of the country as the second draw of the weekend took place in the Estadio Tierra de Campeones as Iquique shared the spoils with Universidad de Concepción in an one-all draw. Getting on the scoresheet for Concepción was veteran Gabriel Vargas whilst Francisco Castro capped his debut for Iquique with a second half equaliser.

The weekend’s action drew to its conclusion in the Estadio Santa Laura as Martin Lasarte’s first match in charge of Universidad de Chile saw them defeat Cobresal 3-1. All of los azules’ goals came in the first half courtesy of Mathias Corujo, Sebastian Ubilla and Patricio Rubio whilst Cobresal’s goal courtesy of Carlos Escobar was little more than a consolation effort as it came in stoppage time of the second half.
