Universidad de Concepción have the slimmest advantage in the Primera B Promotion playoff after defeating Curicó Unido 1-0 in the first leg held in the Estadio Collao in Concepción.
The games only goal came in the eighth minute courtesy of former Universidad de Chile striker, Gabriel Vargas who calmly slotted home past Curicó goalkeeper Luis Santelices after getting on the end of an excellent through ball. El campanil had various chances to add to their goal tally via Michael Lepe, Aníbal Carballo and another chance for Vargas but had to settle for the solitary goal come the full time whistle.
Curicó Unido for their part created only a few chances and rarely troubled Universidad de Concepción’s Argentinean goalkeeper Christian Muñoz. This is something they will need to improve on come Sunday’s second leg if they are to return to the Primera Division for the first time since 2008.
The return leg will be played in Curicó’s Estadio La Granja on Sunday with kickoff taking place at noon. The winner of the tie over the two legs will gain promotion to the Primera Division whilst the loser will get a second chance at life in the top flight of Chilean football by taking on Cobresal, who are seventeenth on the coeficiente de rendimiento table, in another two-legged playoff.
