Week twelve saw the quest for the title tighten up once again with four teams separated by two points at the summit after Unión Española suffered its first loss since week two whilst Universidad Católica triumphed in the clásico against Colo Colo to see them move within one point.
Friday’s action kicked off in the Estadio Bicentenario Lucio Fariña with Santiago Wanderers making it three wins in a row with a 2-1 victory over Audax Italiano. The victory came in Wanderers’ 100th match in the Primera Division courtesy of goals to Leandro Torres and Nicolás López Macri in the ninth and twelfth minutes respectively. Sebastián Sáez scored in his fourth consecutive match in the 43rd minute but it wasn’t enough for the visitors. The win sees Wanderers move into sixth position in the table whilst Audax Italiano remain in thirteenth.
In Saturday’s opening match Palestino returned to he winners’ list with a 2-1 victory over Everton in the Estadio La Cisterna. Second half goals to Lucas Simón and Sergio López were enough for los arabes to pick up their first win since round nine. Ángel Rojas scored from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute for Everton but in the end it proved to be little more than a consolation goal as Everton slumped to their third successive loss. With the win Palestino moved above their opponents into eleventh position on the table.
The only draw of the round took place in the weekend’s next match as O’Higgins and Universidad de Chile shared the spoils in a 2-all draw in the Estadio Santa Laura. In sixteen meetings between these two teams at this stadium this is the seventh time that they have left the pitch with a point apiece. Carlos Escobar provided the only goal of the first half as he opened the scoring for O’Higgins in the 21st minute before Isaac Diaz hit back for La U shortly after the half time break. Braulio Leal put los celestes ahead from the penalty spot in the 57th minute before Diaz complete his brace fifteen minutes later. The result saw both teams drop a spot on the table despite the fact they moved within two points of the league leader, Unión Española.
Ñublense continued Iquique’s miserable start to 2013 inflicting the ninth loss of the season for the northerners with a 1-0 victory in the Estadio Tierra de Campeones. The game’s solitary goal came in the 24th minute courtesy of Alvaro Reyes, with the defender heading home after being left unmarked at a corner. The win sees los rojos diablos move up to eighth position whilst Iquique drop to the foot of the table.
Up until Sebastián Jaime scored in the 37th minute it had been 488 minutes since Unión Española last scored against Unión La Calera in the Primera Division but Jaime’s goal was unable to end la furia roja’s recent run of poor form against La Calera as goals to Maximiliano Bajter and Leandro Banegas saw them slump to a 2-1 loss, their first since round two. Despite the loss Unión Española are still on top of the table but their lead has now been cut to just one point whilst for their opponents the win sees them move into seventh position.
Rangers de Talca were another team that returned to the winners’ list in Saturday’s last game as they defeated Antofagasta 4-1 in the Estadio Bicentenario Fiscal de Talca. Their goals came courtesy of captain Javier Capelli (who coincidentally also scored Antofagasta’s only goal), Adrian Rojas, Gervasio Núñez and Sebastián Sciorilli and all came within the first hour of proceedings. The win see remain in tenth whilst for Antofagasta they have dropped back into the bottom two of the coeficiente de rendimiento table.
Sunday was all about the clásico as Colo Colo played host to Universidad Católica in the Estadio Monumental. And like all clásicos it didn’t disappoint with controversies, sending offs and a single goal to decide matters. Going into the match there were only five points separating the two teams but los cruzados showed that the gap was much greater than that with a dominant performance that was capped off with a single Hans Martínez goal in the 73rd minute.
It wouldn’t be a clásico without some red cards but this time we had to wait until second half injury time for not one but two of them. Firstly Felipe Flores picked up one for a late challenge on Universidad Católica goalkeeper, Cristopher Toselli and then in the ensuing melee young starlet Nicolás Castillo managed to get himself sent off. The win see los cruzados move within a point of league leaders Unión Española leap frogging both Universidad de Chile and O’Higgins in the process.
Cobreloa picked up their first win in five rounds with a 2-1 win over San Marcos de Arica in a match that was somewhat overshadowed by the clásico. All the goals came in the last fifteen minutes of proceedings with Marco Sebastián Pol continuing his good season with goals in the 78th and 90th minutes before Daniel Mustafá grabbed a late consolation goal in the 92nd minute. Cobreloa stay in fifth position after the win whilst for San Marcos things look exceedingly grim as they sit on bottom of the coeficiente de rendimiento table.
In the weekend’s final match Cobresal managed to do something they hadn’t done all season and that was pick up all three points as they defeated Huachipato in the Estadio CAP. Goals to Mariano Torres in the 26th minute and Álvaro Navarro in the 56th minute saw Cobresal defeat Huachipato for the first time since the 2005 Apertura season. The win lifts off the bottom of the regular season table but they are still third from bottom on the coeficiente de rendimiento table. Huachipato, whose Copa Libertadores campaign came to an end midweek, remain in fourteenth position on the table.
